AF Sculpture 4 Elements

AF Elements – Earth, Fire, Air, Water

Introducing our latest range – AF ELEMENTS – Earth, Fire, Air, Water

We are proud to announce that we have been working on an exciting new series ‘AF Elements’. We can’t wait to share the finished products with you very soon as Arthur Francis Sculpture takes on the elements. The series has been inspired by the four elements EARTH, FIRE, AIR and WATER. Each item in the range has been developed with one of these elements in mind.

The 4 elements date back to Ancient Greek times when they were used to explain everything in existence within our universe. The idea being that the four elements – earth, fire, air and water – make up all earthly matter, this principle was the cornerstone of philosophy, science, and medicine for thousands of years. The philosophy has since progressed to explain that every visible thing is made up of some combination of earth, fire, air and water. The four elements have even been used in a number of disciplines to describe the temperaments of people!

Far from an outdated philosophy, the 4 elements developed way-back-when remain as relevant as ever, modern science even agrees with the principles, many works focus around the four states of matter: solid (earth), plasma (fire), gas (air) and liquid (water).

Chinese philosophy has many theories around the elements fire, earth, metal, water and wood, focusing heavily on the process of change, and how each of these elements plays a part in the balance of everything that surrounds us. In terms of Chinese philosophy the cycle of creation is: wood feeds fire – fire creates earth (ash) – earth bears metal – metal collects water – water nourishes wood.

We gradually began to notice how many of our products played a part in this ongoing cycle of balance: wood fuels fire in our firepits – our firepits then create ash that dissolves down in to the earth – the earth itself bears the metal elements that we use each day to create – with this metal we create water features that collect and hold water – this brings us back to wood as the water nourishes the trees that grow in our planters. How satisfying it is to identify this complete cycle!

Once we had noticed the parallels between these ancient principles and our very own work our interest in the subject was sparked, after that we started noticing it with increasing frequency, this led us to the idea of developing a range that pays respect to these old and beautiful processes – and thus we have the starting point of our AF Elements range.

In the creation of this range we have been focusing on the balance of process and creation.

We are:

  • Developing planters that nurture plants, veg and wood from the EARTH.
  • Making firepits and chimeneas to get the FIRE burning.
  • Communicating the direction of the AIR and light with weathervanes and decorative steel screens.
  • Enabling WATER to be fluid and moving with spectacular water features.

We will keep you updated as each of the elements unfolds so keep an eye on our blog.
